Back to Black Album Beats Other Best-Sellers

21 December 2007

At least 1.5 million copies of the ‘Back to Black’ album of Amy Winehouse were sold on the market, making it top the best-selling albums this year.

Back to Black is Winehouse’s second album which was released in 2006. Its number of sales already merited five platinum sales awards.

Following Winehouse’s album is the ‘Spirit’ by Leona Lewis and ‘Life in Cartoon Motion’ by Mika. Still, there is a whole week to name the official best-selling album in the UK.

Meanwhile, Winehouse was also nominated for the Song of the Year and five other Grammy awards.

"Amy Winehouse's Back To Black is in pole position to be the year's biggest seller," said by the BPI’s spokesman for the record labels body, Matt Phillips. "But more than 6 million albums were sold last week, and as this weekend is likely to be the biggest of the year for music sales, Leona may close the gap."

In five weeks, Lewis became the fastest-selling new artist in the UK. About 1.27 million copies of her album were sold in that short span of time. According to BPI, the former X Factor winner has been the fastest seller among female artists in the UK.

In 2007, the Spirit also followed Back to Black by hitting a million copies in sales. In the same year, Lewis got the Best Selling Single for her ‘Bleeding Love’ and remained consistent number one in the charts.
