BBC 6 Music’s 'overrated' list
18 September 2005
The BBC digital radio station 6 Music named several of the all-time great album hits but considered them to be a lowdown on everyone’s playlist.
Some of the hits of the rock world have been named and included on a shame list as the most “overrated” album of all time. The chosen albums include what many consider “finest work” like those of the Beach Boys and Beatles. More contemporary bands like the Libertines and Radiohead are also on the edge.
The list has been compiled in attempt to find several releases that fail to live up to the hyperbole.
Hundreds of hits are being nominated after week-long on-air discussions and it has been whittled down to a list of 10 by which it will be announces after a vote on BBC’s station website-www.bbc.co.uk/6music.
The Beatles' contribution in the list is their 1967 album ‘Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band’ which hails for a diverse musical styles as well as ground-breaking cover. Although it is often ranked as the greatest album of all time, many of their fans consider its predecessor ‘Revolver’ to be much better.
Radiohead's OK Computer is also considered to be one of the best album of all time.
Ric Blaxill, programme head of BBC 6 Music said, "Some albums which get rave reviews, and subsequently become accepted as classic albums, can just leave you feeling a little cold - you just don't get the hype."
